Poke the Box! Wed, Sep 30, 2015
No theme for this month's Loops, fellas, just random thoughts. I thought I'd steal one of Brig's favorite phrases, "Poke the box", and expand on it a little bit. The book Poke The Box is mostly focused around solving problems in unconventional ways. However, I'll be going off on a bit more of a tangent, so bear with me.
To me, "the box" is a series of habits and patterns that you find yourself repeating. When a problem comes up, we have a set number of comfortable solutions for it. They've worked in the past, so why not use them again? It's difficult and uncomfortable to radically change methods. The problem with this is that it narrows our view. It's a prison that we make for ourselves. How will we ever learn new things or improve ourselves if we cling to the same old shtick every time?
I often find myself simultaneously reviling and admiring the kind of people that do things like live out in the wilderness or hike their way across Europe with no money. Why? Because they've stepped outside the accepted paradigm. Go to college, get a job, work 9-5, buy a house, get married, have kids, retire, die. I'm not saying that's a bad life, by any stretch of the imagination. But there's a whole world of possibilities out there. Try to cast off your fear of the unknown. Attack what you want from a new direction. Forget what's been done before. Don't let "the box" be your tomb.
