Google provides a wealth of information about their design and branding if you're not aware. One of their core design methodologies revolves around material design, which according to Google is creating, "...a visual language for our users that synthesizes the classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science." Given all of the advanced technology Google develops and offers, would you be surprised to learn their design process often begins with cutting out sheets of paper, placing these under lights, and taking photos?
