Distractions and Goals

It's easy to get distracted by what's going on in our lives outside of work, even though it can sometimes begin to get in the way of other important things. It's not always so easy to just leave that "home stuff" at home, especially if there's a particularly big task that will be waiting there for you when you return.

I'm guessing that I'm like most of you- I tend to have a lot more going on outside of work than I actually have the time for; and if I didn't have a plan of attack each week, I would lose my mind and nothing would ever get done. I recently started to make smaller "checkpoints" in my calendar for each goal, both home and work related, allowing me to visibly reach them. I began by deciding what I would like to achieve, set a realistic and firm deadline for myself, then check in routinely to make sure I'm staying on task. It's a good idea to keep a friend in the loop too, since people tend to be more encouraged to do their best when they know someone else is watching... ;)

Make it a habit to reward yourself for your accomplishments...brag to the friend who was holding you accountable; buy something you really don't need; eat something you definitely shouldn't...just make it worth it. You'll feel accomplished and motivated to tackle something else you've been putting off!
