Cognitive Dissonance

Cognitive dissonance is defined as “the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating to behavioral decisions and attitude change.”  This something that plagues us all. Those thoughts of inadequacy, being unsure in your actions, stress and anxiety is in large due to cognitive dissonance.  

Here’s how I look at it.  Imagine a Venn diagram, two circles overlapping.  One is labeled “Who you are” and the other is “Who you want to be.” The farther apart they are the more cognitive dissonance you feel, and contrary, the closer they are to overlapping the less dissonance you feel.  Striving for who you want to become will reduce stress, turmoil and overall anxiety.  Doing everything you can to push those circles together will only improve your life.

So I guess the question is how are you doing to be the person you want to be?
